Sunday Night Chit-Chat

A port in the family-birthday-party storm.

Reading? HP5. So much for rereading the Harry Potter series over the summer.

Watching? I might pull out one of our many DVDs from our pre-cable days.

Listening to? The cat licking his paw. It’s getting colder so he sticks close, looking for a warm lap.

Cooking/Baking? I’d like to make some scones this week. I have some pumpkin butter in the freezer that needs a vehicle.

Happy you accomplished this week? Some painting. We have so many HUGE home reno projects to be done that we let the many many small things slide. I bought some primer and paint and am slowly working away at some trim and some doors.

Looking forward to next week? Peter’s baptism! He’ll be wearing the same outfit that Adam wore and I had to cram Adam into that silkly suit. Even though Peter is being baptised at the same age, he’s a bit more round. I think I might have to sew him in. Yikes!

Thankful for today? Cooler fall weather, a successful gardening season and a determined partner. Thomas tends our vegetable garden and despite many obstacles, he kept us supplied with tasty, organic and (very!) local produce this summer.

*Bonus Question: You receive an unexpected large sum of money. It’s a BIG number. Whats the first thing you do with it? Pay off our debt and put the rest into our emergency funds and savings. Easy-peasy. If it was a truly obscene amount, I’d finish the necessary renovations to our house so we can start working on our Wouldn’t-It-Be-Nice projects.

An organized shelf. (P.S. Ignore the rest of the house.)

Reading? Just finished the second Harry Potter book, moving onto the third. A sad pace but it’s indicative of my current sleep deprivation.

Watching? Meh. I can’t wait for new fall shows to start. I have no idea what’s coming up or what’s good but it can’t be worse than the summer fare.

Listening to? Adam not sleeping.

Cooking/Baking? I made two loaves of bread today, roasted a chicken, made soup stock and stewed tomatoes. Yay, weekend hydro rates!

Happy you accomplished this week? Um, the house isn’t MESSIER than this time last week…

Looking forward to next week? Enjoying more veggies from our garden! We’re in full production!

Thankful for today? Sweet blogging friends! Carla sent us two more lovely washcloths. They are so perfect for Peter and I’m thankful to “know” someone so crafty and so thoughtful. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Carla!

Reading? Home Schooling on a Shoe String.

Watching? Something from the DVR. I tend to set recordings late at night when I’m super tired and a) forget that I set the recording and b) set to record some very odd things. Last night we watching a Nova documentary about rats.

Listening to? A purring cat.

Cooking/Baking? I baked bread this afternoon using a new recipe. It tastes better but it takes a lot longer to make than our last recipe.

Happy you accomplished this week? Um, a lot of laundry? Considering what we need to get done, I don’t feel like I’ve done much at all.

Looking forward to next week? Enjoying the nice (cooler) weather.

Thankful for today? That we can homeschool. Thankful today and every day.

As a famous athlete, you are offered a $500,000 endorsement to promote a product that you dislike and would NEVER use. Do you endorse it? First, even imagining that I could be any sort of athlete is staggering, but suspending disbelief, it would depend on the product. Selling diet pills? No. Selling a disgusting cereal or ugly sunglasses? Sure. I think endorsements are part of the “business” of being an competitive athlete.

Over the last month, Adam has been doing a lot more “pretend play”. Here he is cooking with Miss Kitty.

What are you…

Reading? Missus Gamgee inspired me to reread the Harry Potter series and I’m nearly through HP1.

Watching? I’ve been binge-watching Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag. I prefer a cooking show where things go wrong… often. I find it reassuring.

Listening To? Tiny snores.

Cooking/Baking? I should make some bread tonight but I’m exhausted. Peter was up every hour (or less) last night. I did make some Banana Oatmeal Muffins yesterday which were rather meh. Adam really liked them, though.

Happy you accomplished this week? I can’t say I accomplished much. We were out of town on two different days (a trip to the zoo and a trip to the doctor’s) and we had family or friends visiting on three other days. That’s a crazy week for us anti-social homebodies.

Looking forward to this week? A trip with the Early Years Centre to the fire station. For Adam, obviously.

Thankful for today? A relatively grump-free day for Adam. I think he’s starting to forgive me for bringing Peter home.

When it comes to shopping for clothes for yourself, what item do you have the hardest time saying “no” to?
Hmmm… Now that I don’t work, I try to only buy clothes I absolutely need. When I did work, I liked to buy my clothes from online indie stores, which were pretty pricey (for me). I couldn’t imagine spending $32 of a t-shirt now. Yikes!

Our house, several times this summer.

What are you…

Reading? Just finished Bill Bryson’s Down Under. I know so much more about Australia!

Watching? I think DH and I will head downstairs and watch DVR’d episodes of The Big Bang Theory. Eating ice cream may or may not be involved.

Listening to? The sweet silence of two boys sleeping and the hum of the air-conditioner in the only comfortable room in the house.

Cooking/Baking? I’ve made a BIG pot of tomato sauce with our first big haul of garden tomatoes – 20! I should bake some bread but I don’t want to turn the oven on.

Happy you accomplished this week? Lots of laundry, lots of baking and made doctor’s appointments for both boys, Adam’s annual check-up and Peter’s two-month Well Baby visit.

Looking forward to this week? I wish I could say “more comfortable weather”. Apparently, not. I’m looking forward to another week of DH’s vacation!

Thankful for today? Our garden harvest and chest freezer. We have tomato sauce and cucumber relish to enjoy this winter.

What hobby have you always wanted to learn? Do you plans on trying to learn? Why or why not?
I used to want to crochet but I could never get the hang of it. Knitting seems so much simpler. I would very much like to improve my sewing.

Baby 2.0 at 32 weeks.

James Howard Kunstler’s non-fiction is much better than this novel. But I’ve read enough that I feel I’m committed to finishing the book. Darn it.

Watching: Amazing Race!

Listening To: The baby monitor. Adam’s been trying to sleep with his foot at the end of his toddler bed and inevitably, he rolls over and falls out.

Knitting: A seed stitch blanket I’ve been working on for YEARS. When I’m tired but still want to sit in front of the TV, I turn to this very easy knitting.

Happy you accomplished this week: Sent in our tax returns and got an estimate on installing a gas line in our soon-to-be kitchen. Let the renovations begin!

Looking forward to next week: A follow-up appointment for Adam’s speech therapy. In the last two weeks, he has a new word (“coco” for coconut) and four signs (“open”, “more”, “all done” and “help”).

Thankful for today: “Unofficial” good news from the ultrasound technician. The baby’s measurements looked good to her.

A picture from trip to the zoo last summer. Remember t-shirts? Shorts?

Reading? A biography of Elizabeth I. The only time I have to read is before bed when I’m exhausted so this has been a long haul, a few pages at a time.

Watching? The Pro Bowl. For Thomas’ Christmas present, I rearranged the budget and down-graded our phone package so I could order very basic cable so Thomas could watch football. And because we have our phone, Internet and now cable from the same company, they offered us a free DVR for 24 months. We don’t have to remember to set the VCR (old skool!) to tape Time Team anymore!

Listening To? Our unbelievably loud furnace. Geez Louise.

Cooking/Baking? No immediate plans. Adam and I have been having pancakes for breakfast WAY too often lately so baking seems like a bit much after all that floury, maply syrupy goodness.

Happy you accomplished this week? Finally finished Adam’s scarf to match his mama-made mittens and hat.

Looking forward to next week? My OB appointment.

Thankful for today? Food in the fridge and warm boots.
